New Features of Joomla 3.7 Will Impact JomSocial Translations

Joomla 3.7 is coming soon and we are all excited for its new roster of awesome features. But it does come with a warning. The new features will affect almost all JomSocial translations and render them obsolete.

If you are a translator or have a multilingual website, you will need to make a minor update to your language files.


JomSocial is one of the oldest and biggest Joomla components on the market today. It has been actively developed over last decade… which in Web development terms makes it a living fossil. Coding standards that were acceptable and useful five years ago have been replaced with standards that are now faster and better. That process is also happening to the JomSocial translations created years ago.

The process began when Joomla 1.5 transitioned to Joomla 1.6 (2.5), which required all language files to update to a new format. This new format required the use of a quotation (“) mark at the beginning and the end of translated strings. Because the same character has often been used within translations themselves we had to use a placeholder. Joomla came up with its own solution. This new release features over 700 improvements to the popular CMS, including many features which make administration of Joomla! SocialEngine 4.9.1 Release

Bet you didn’t expect to see us with another release so soon! Our team is committed to providing a quality product for our clients. This minor release addresses some issues that impacted clients that had third party products and upgraded before those products had compatible versions. We felt we needed to improve our product in order to avoid any issues with third party products that aren’t updated. This release addresses the aforementioned concern, as well as a few other issues.

Fixed Issues or Improvements Made:

Fixed issue with user privacy for photo album not respecting member level. (Fixes #607)
Fixed issue with user profile fields info not being searchable if added before admin made those fields searchable. (Fixes #592)

We noticed an issue that precipitated an immediate release. This 4.9.1p1 release patch fixes an issue with photo album privacy on the profile.

Changed files:

Fixing profile album issue
Fixing search related issues
You can download your copy of this patch from your client account. The file will be Photo Albums 4.9.1p1. No need to run the full upgrade if you already have upgraded to 4.9.1.
